Description
Dog Breed: Bluetick Coonhound (short coat). Online Adoption Application › Meet Myla Myla is a beautiful Bluetick Coonhound rescued in September 2024 from Cumberland County Shelter in Fayetteville, NC, where she was on the euthanasia list. Myla is an enthusiastic, smart, and affectionate hound who loves to communicate her excitement with her bay. She is highly food-motivated, enjoys learning, and does best with structure and enrichment. She is not aggressive but does have some behavioral sensitivities, including frustration with barriers and noise sensitivity. She is actively working with the NC State Behavioral Medicine team and has completed a board-and-train at Green Beagle Lodge. All professional reports can be shared. Myla loves other dogs, lives well with a small dog, was respectful of a free-roam indoor bunny, and tested indifferent to cats at the shelter. She has a sensitive stomach and eats Purina HA prescription kibble. Myla would thrive in a committed, structured home with someone who understands hounds and enjoys training. Thank you for considering this special girl.

Overview:
The Bluetick Coonhound is a striking American breed, recognized for its distinctive deep blue, mottled coat and powerful build. Originating in the Southern United States from the French Grand Bleu de Gascogne hound, they were selectively bred for their exceptional tracking abilities, particularly for raccoons. Physically, they are strong, muscular dogs with long, droopy ears, a high-set tail, and an expressive gaze. Temperamentally, Blueticks are intelligent, friendly, and outgoing, possessing a strong prey drive and an endearing, almost mournful, baying bark. While generally good with children and other pets when properly socialized, their high energy levels and vocal nature make them less suitable for apartment living; a home with a secure, fenced yard is ideal. Prospective owners should be aware of potential health issues such as hip and elbow dysplasia, as well as bloat, emphasizing the importance of responsible breeding and regular veterinary care.
