A Diamond in the Ruff: Meet Luie Sweet Luie is a gentle soul with a heart full of quiet hope When he first arrived, he was an underweight, shy boy, unsure of the world around him. With a little care and kindness, Luie has been gaining both weight and confidence—and it’s been beautiful to watch him bloom. One of the best moments is seeing Luie light up around squeaky toys! In those playful bursts, you can glimpse the happy dog he’s becoming—running, playing, and letting his worries fade away, even if just for a while. On walks, he’s calm and easy to handle, and he takes treats with the softest, most polite touch. Luie has the cutest white paws that look just like little socks, and they carry a dog who is trying his very best every day. He’ll thrive with a patient, loving family willing to give him the time and space he needs to feel safe. There’s truly a diamond in the rough here—sweet, gentle, and waiting for someone to see just how special he is. Luie recently met some social dogs at our shelter and was a little scared. He wasn’t ready to play, but we hope that as he gets more experience in our shelter playgroups, he’ll be ready to show us his silly side with other dogs. Looking for a buddy for your dog? Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
