Description
Dog Breed: Shepherd (short coat). ***Lisa is currently at SoCo Rescue in Georgia. She is scheduled to be transported to New Jersey and be available for adoption at the Tractor Supply in Ringoes over the Jan 31st weekend. An application for Lisa's adoption can be submitted at socorescue (no need to register or login). Questions about Lisa and/or our adoption policy should be sent to socorescue8gmail; please do not call the rescue.*** Lisa and her brother, Bart, were only about 3 months old when they were found as abandoned strays. Both were suffering from malnutrition, loaded with worms and parasites and suffering from loss of fur. They were very apprehensive of people and spent their first few weeks here doing their best to avoid us. Among the two, Lisa has made the most progress in learning to make friends with people. She's even making progress on her leash and crate training. She will allow you to pick her up, but a slow, gentle and non-invasive behavior approach is best so as not to scare her. Lisa has even cuddled up to staff members and seems to want to make friends. Still, because of her very timid nature, an adopter who is experienced with timid dogs with a low-commotion environment and no young children would be best for her. Lisa would also benefit by having another dog, who is well socialized, sharing the home with her. Lisa has now received 3 of her first year "puppy" vaccines, been de-wormed at proper intervals and even started on her monthly flea/tick and heartworm preventatives. She's also recently been spay. Lisa will require additional training, which she seems very smart and eager to learn new things, making the training much easier.

A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
