Dog Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Meet COWBOY! This sweet boy was brought into the shelter as a stray in Atlantic City at just 9 months old. Since entering foster care on 1/20, Cowboy has absolutely flourished in every way. Now approaching his first birthday, Cowboy is potty trained, knows commands like sit and paw, and has learned so much about life in a loving home. He’s incredibly smart, eager to learn, and full of personality—he’ll keep you laughing daily with his incredibly goofy, lovable antics. Cowboy is the perfect mix of playful and affectionate. He’s active and curious, but also the snuggliest mushy boy who just wants to be close to his people. Simply put—this boy just wants to love and be loved. His confidence continues to grow each day, and we think he would thrive in a home that will keep building on his training. He has proven to be very dog friendly, as he absolutely loves spending time with his foster siblings—whether it’s walks, playtime in the yard, or snuggling up together. Another playful pup preferred! Cowboy is neutered, up to date on all vaccinations, microchipped, and officially ready for adoption. Who’s going to be the lucky family to welcome this lovable goofball into their home?!

A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
