Dog Breed: Shepherd / Terrier / Mixed (short coat). evolution schmovolution. just wants a loving home! DARWIN NEEDS A FOSTER OR FOREVER HOME!!!! Name: Darwin Best Guess for Breed: Shepherd and terrier mix Best Guess for Age: 5 years as of January 2026 SEX: Male Approximate Weight: 33.5 lbs as of 1/26/27; he is underweight at this weight Gets Along With: Other dogs! We haven't seen him with cats or kids but we are happy to discuss integration techniques with any potential adopters! Currently Living at: South Carolina shelter; needs a foster or forever home in the DC area to get up here. Darwin is Looking For: This handsome guy landed in the shelter through no fault of his own, quite underweight. He's closed that chapter and is eagerly looking ahead to his new one. The one where he gets his own humans for long sniffy walks and romps and all the adventures they can dream up. He's well out of the puppy yips and is in his prime as an adult dog, so he knows what's most important in life: being safe and loved and under his own roof. A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
