Description
Dog Breed: Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler / Mixed (medium coat). Meet Oreo, the Australian Cattle dog mix. Oreo came into the Shelter after his previous guardian was unable to continue caring for him after moving from a ranch to an apartment. Oreo primarily lived outdoors in his previous home and has experience around horses, chickens, sheep and other dogs. It took a few days for Oreo to warm up at the Shelter but he has been social and amiable after a decompression period. Oreo has met a couple of dogs since his arrival at the Shelter and has done well. Another dog in the home may be a fit provided there is a meet and greet at the Shelter prior to adoption as well as a thoughtful introduction in the home. Although Oreo has primarily been outdoors, we anticipate he will likely adapt (and ultimately enjoy) being a part of the family with some outdoor lounging on sunny days. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering âPawsitivity Bucksâ with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz locationâs Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end âmeet and greetsâ (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If youâd like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.

Breed overview
Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
