Koa – Chocolate Female, 8 years, 85 lbs Meet Koa, a lovable chocolate girl with a heart as big as her belly-rub enthusiasm. Koa lives for affection — she’ll happily sit on your foot, slowly slide to the floor, and dramatically flop over to demand belly rubs. One of her many nicknames is “Speed Bump,” and once you meet her, you’ll understand why. Koa loves to play fetch and tug and is often found proudly walking around the house with a ball in her mouth. She’s also an avid chewer and enjoys moose and deer antlers (no rawhide here!), which has helped keep her teeth impressively clean. At bedtime, Koa settles right in, sleeping through the night on her bed after enjoying her nightly treat. She walks well on leash, especially with her foster brother Ricky, and enjoys playing with dogs her own size. Koa is social, affectionate, and happiest when she’s near her person — following her foster around the house and yard and laying close whenever possible. Koa’s journey hasn’t been easy. Her former owner did not address her ongoing pain and discomfort until it became an emergency, at which point Lab Rescue stepped in. Koa was suffering from bladder stones that required urgent surgery. She underwent surgery over Thanksgiving and spent a week hospitalized, followed by several months of medication and pain management. Thankfully, she has recovered well and is feeling so much better. Going forward, Koa will need to remain on a prescription diet to prevent the stones from recurring. At just 8 years old, this sweet senior still has plenty of pep in her step. Koa is simply looking for a comfortable home, consistent care, and people who will love her the way she deserves. Overview:

The Labrador Retriever, a beloved and highly popular breed, originated in Newfoundland, Canada, where they were initially bred to assist fishermen by retrieving nets and stray fish. Physically, they are medium-to-large dogs, known for their strong, athletic build, short, dense, weather-resistant double coat (commonly seen in black, yellow, or chocolate), and their distinctive "otter" tail. Temperamentally, Labs are celebrated for their friendly, outgoing, and good-natured disposition, making them exceptional family companions. Their intelligence and eagerness to please contribute to their trainability, though they do require consistent exercise to prevent boredom and destructive behaviors. While adaptable, their energy levels make them more suited to homes with yards, or highly active families, rather than apartment living, unless daily extensive exercise is guaranteed. Regarding health, Labs can be prone to certain conditions like hip and elbow dysplasia, and some eye conditions, so responsible breeding practices are crucial. Overall, their loyalty, versatility, and affectionate nature firmly establish the Labrador Retriever as a wonderful addition to many households.
