Dog Breed: Shepherd / Mixed. Meet Wesley (GA)! We believe he is a 14weekold ShepherdRetriever mix gentleman who has already survived his first major plot twist. He and his siblings were abandoned outside in freezing weather, huddled together like a tiny canine support group wondering who signed them up for winter survival training. Luckily, rescuers arrived before this turned into a tragic snowday special, and Wesley has been warming up—literally and emotionally—ever since. Now that he’s safe, Wesley is proving to be an absolute delight. He loves people, charms other dogs with ease, and approaches life with the enthusiasm of someone who just discovered treats exist. He’s sweet, friendly, and adorably clumsy in that classic puppy way, still figuring out where all four legs are supposed to go. Every person he meets is greeted like a longlost friend who might also be carrying snacks. Wesley is ready for a home that appreciates a good underdog story and enjoys a healthy dose of puppy comedy. A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
