After being found as a stray and never reclaimed, she has become one of our Diamond Dogs, and her adoption fee has been reduced to just $75. Athena is a gentle, sensitive girl who may be shy at first, but with time and kindness, she blossoms into a loyal and affectionate companion. She walks nicely on a leash, enjoys spending time with her people, and is eager to learn through positive reinforcement. Athena does well with calm, easygoing dogs and would benefit from a confident canine companion who can help her feel secure and continue building her confidence. A meet and greet is required for homes with existing dogs. She is spayed, microchipped, current on her vaccinations, and heartworm positive. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics.
