Dog Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed. Athena is a 2-year-old Pit mix weighing approximately 53 lbs who is looking for a patient, loving home to call her own. She was found near Lakeshore in Rockwall and, sadly, was never reclaimed. Now she's ready for a fresh start with a family who will give her the time and stability she deserves. Athena is a gentle, sensitive girl who can be a little shy at first in new situations. With patience and kindness, she begins to open up and show her true personalitysweet, affectionate, and eager to be close to her people. She forms strong bonds and will thrive in a home that allows her to build confidence at her own pace. She walks nicely on a leash and, while she may not have had much formal training, she is eager to learn and has great potential with consistency and positive reinforcement. Athena does well with calm, easygoing dogs and would be a good match for a home with a similar doggie companion. She may also do very well as the only dog in the home where she can fully settle in and bond with her person. A meet and greet is recommended for homes with existing pets to ensure a good fit. Athena is spayed, microchipped, current on her rabies vaccination and boosters, and has tested heartworm positive. Thanks to Rockwall PAWS, Athena's course of heartworm treatment is sponsored so that she has every opportunity to go on to live a happy, healthy life. Her adoption fee is $125. This policy is non-negotiable and violation of this health code is a criminal offense.

Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
