Description
Dog Breed: Australian Shepherd. Meet Ivy Ivy is a sweet, affectionate, and loyal dog who forms strong bonds with her people. She’s the kind of dog that wants to be close at all times, following you from room to room and leaning into you for full-body hugs. She thrives on connection and will quickly become your constant companion. Ivy was found as a stray in rural Texas and has come a long way since then. She completed heartworm treatment prior to transport and is now healthy, thriving, and ready for her forever home. She is fully potty trained, crate trained, and has excellent house manners. Ivy settles well in her crate when left alone and is not destructive. She is a respectful and easy dog to live with. Ivy has a moderate energy level and does best with a balance of physical activity and downtime. She enjoys daily walks, playing fetch, and spending time outdoors, but also loves to relax and cuddle with her people. She would do well in a home that can provide both exercise and mental enrichment. She has done well with medium to large dogs and enjoys appropriate play and interaction. She has briefly been exposed to a cat and ignored it, though proper introductions are recommended. Ivy may do well with older children, but due to her tendency to jump when excited, a home with younger children is not recommended. On leash, Ivy can be strong when excited and may pull, but she is improving with consistency and does especially well after exercise. She is intelligent, eager to please, and responds well to training. She already knows several commands, including sit, stay, come, down, and shake. Ivy would do best in an active home with prior herding breed experience. She will benefit from continued structure, training, and engagement. She would likely excel in activities such as agility or other dog sports. Ivy is an incredibly loving, happy, and devoted dog who is ready to find a home where she can continue to thrive. This dog is up to date on vaccinations and is spayed or neutered. (Please note: Puppies under 3 months old may not be sterilized prior to adoption. If this is the case, your adoption coordinator will provide guidance on the process.) To adopt or learn more about this dog, you must complete an adoption application, which can be found on our website: .sandypawsrescue. PLEASE READ: • If a dog or puppy is listed, they are currently available for adoption. However, they may already be pending an adoption, and their profile may not yet reflect this. • All information is accurate to the best of our knowledge as of the posting date. • Unless explicitly stated, Sandy Paws Rescue does not guarantee the breed of any dog. Breeds listed are educated guesses made by shelter staff, volunteers, or veterinarians. Many of our dogs are mixed breeds, often with pit bull-type genetics, resulting in a wide variety of physical traits and temperaments. Our dogs come from various situations, such as kill shelters, owner surrenders, or as strays. It is likely both parents were mixed breeds as well. Sandy Paws Rescue does not have a public shelter in Massachusetts. Our dogs reside in private foster homes or boarding kennels in the South until adopted. Many dogs are spoken for prior to transport or release from state-mandated isolation. For information on adoption fees, procedures, or FAQs, visit our website: .sandypawsrescue. The FIRST step in adopting from Sandy Paws Rescue is to submit a completed adoption application.

Overview:
The Australian Shepherd, despite its name, actually originated in the western United States during the 19th century, bred primarily for herding livestock on ranches. These striking dogs are medium-sized with a sturdy build, often sporting captivating merle coats (blue or red) and piercing blue, amber, or marbled eyes, sometimes with two different colors (heterochromia). Known for their exceptional intelligence and high energy, Aussies possess a strong work drive and thrive on having a "job" to do, whether it's agility, obedience, or extensive exercise. Their temperament is generally loyal, affectionate, and good-natured with their families, though they can be reserved with strangers. Due to their high exercise requirements and need for mental stimulation, they are best suited for active families or individuals with ample outdoor space and a commitment to training; apartment living is generally not ideal. Potential owners should also be aware of common health concerns like hip and elbow dysplasia and certain eye conditions, including Collie Eye Anomaly (CEA) and Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA).
