Description
Dog Breed: Staffordshire Bull Terrier (medium coat). OTHER PETS: Nala is comfortable and relaxed with other dogs, greeting well but disengaging quickly. We feel she may be more playful with a dog that she *is* interested in, but we are unsure exactly what her standards are. Nala should meet any dog she would be living with prior to adoption. [Case-By-Case (Must Meet First)] OWNER EXPERIENCE: Nala would do best with a human experienced using positive reinforcement as she continues to learn new skills & some fun tricks. [Some Experience] KIDS: Nala has not engaged in resource-guarding while at TJO, she solicits interaction, and is comfortable with most handling. She would probably like most humans but does her impression of a wrecking ball when excited and may accidently knock over smaller humans. Nala should meet any minor humans she would be living with prior to adoption. [10+ / Dog Savvy (Must Meet First)] ACTIVITY LEVEL: Nala is more interested in human interaction than toys, but she almost always will stop to play with a squeaky one. She has bursts of arrousal but settles quickly while playing, and when not pulling (she's working on it!) walks at a nice pace. Nala would likely do well with regular exercise such as daily walks tailored to her endurance level, and mental enrichment to fully meet her needs. [Good Walking Buddy] VETERINARY CARE: [Routine] LEVEL OF TRAINING NEEDED: Positive reinforcement training will help Nala bond with her new owner while building confidence, and learning life skills and some fun tricks. [Minimal] GROOMING: [Minimal]

Breed overview
Staffordshire Bull Terrier
A.K.A.: Stafford, Staffy, English Staffy, Staffie, Nanny Dog
Overview:
The Staffordshire Bull Terrier, affectionately known as a "Staffy," is a robust and agile breed originating from 19th-century England, bred for its strength and courage. Physically, they are compact and muscular, with a broad head, pronounced cheek muscles, and a short, smooth coat that comes in various colors. Despite their powerful appearance, Staffies are renowned for their affectionate and gentle nature, particularly towards children, earning them the nickname "nanny dog." They are intelligent, highly trainable, and thrive on human companionship, making them excellent family pets. Their relatively small size and moderate exercise needs mean they can adapt well to apartment living, provided they receive daily walks and mental stimulation. Generally a healthy breed, they can be prone to certain conditions like L-2-Hydroxyglutaric Aciduria (L2HGA), hereditary cataracts, and patellar luxation, so responsible breeding practices are crucial. With proper socialization and training, a Staffy will be a loyal, devoted, and entertaining companion.
