Description
Dog Breed: Chihuahua (medium coat). Meet Courage, the little chocolate chihuahua! Courage arrived at the Shelter with their 8 other friends. Their previous guardian had too many pups and, despite really great intentions to help, felt a bit overwhelmed caring for them all. At this time, Courage is a bit of a cowardly little guy but we named him Courage to inspire him in his next steps of adoption. His previous guardian reported that Courage is social with people and other dogs (small and large). A home with a confident, playful dog may be a fit for Courage. Cats may be appropriate with a slow, thoughtful introduction. He enjoyed walking on leash and playing. At the Shelter, we have not necessarily seen that and Courage is generally timid. We anticipate that Courage will start to blossom in a patient, dog-savvy home environment after adoption. If you would like to be a part of a transformation after adoption and have some extra love in your heart to give a dog â consider meeting Courage today. Courage is available for preadoption at this time - come in, fall in love and you can take him after his neuter surgery! The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering âPawsitivity Bucksâ with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Now through February 15th, all adoption fees are reduced to $33 - come to the Shelter today to adopt your very own Valentine! Please note: Our Santa Cruz locationâs Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end âmeet and greetsâ (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If youâd like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.

Overview:
The Chihuahua, a captivating breed known for its diminutive size, boasts an ancient and somewhat mysterious origin, with most theories pointing to Mexico as its birthplace, potentially descending from the "Techichi," a small companion dog of the Toltec civilization. Physically, they are easily recognizable by their small, compact bodies, large expressive eyes, and erect ears, appearing in both smooth and long-coated varieties, showcasing a vast array of colors and markings. Despite their tiny stature, Chihuahuas possess a big personality; they are often described as spirited, alert, and fiercely loyal to their owners, sometimes displaying a bold and confident demeanor. While their small size makes them exceptionally well-suited for apartment living, they thrive in homes where they receive ample attention and mental stimulation. They can be good family pets for older children who understand how to interact gently with a small dog, but their delicate build makes them less suitable for boisterous toddlers. Regarding health, Chihuahuas can be prone to certain conditions like patellar luxation, heart problems, and dental issues, making regular veterinary check-ups crucial for their well-being.
