Description
Dog Breed: German Shepherd Dog (medium coat). From Smokey’s Foster Mom: Smokey has been in the Foster Care Program and has been living with us for about 3 months. It’s just my husband and I. He truly is a great companion and very loyal and will attach himself to you. He is house broken and has learned the word “go potty” when outside. He graduated from being in a kennel within 4 days of being home. He loves to curl up on the couch on a blanket but does run hot and will lay on the floor to cool off. He has a few favorite toys but mostly just enjoys being with you. He does have some separation anxiety issues but has come a long way. The less he can see you leaving the better. Otherwise, he will try and look out the window. Possibly, breaking the blinds (trying to look out). He does not chew on anything. He likes to be outside preferably with someone but will lay down and relax. He is a very chill dog. He is not hyper or high strung but is A LOT of fun to watch when he gets excited. He will run around and his front legs go everywhere. It’s very comical. He is not a barker BUT will definitely let you know when he smells or hears something that he feels is not right. Very protective. He knows the command of “it’s alright” when he smells or hears something and will stop barking. Also, knows commands of sit, heel, lay down, where’s your ball and have a bite to eat. He is doing great learning to stay and when told to stay in your yard. Walks great on a leash. We have acreage so I let him run off leash and he does not run away BUT, I would show him his boundaries before letting him off leash or train with him on a long rope. He rides good in a car with the reminder of you saying to him “you stay in the back” when you are getting out to go let him out from the back. I always have food and water out for him but he usually eats in the evening. Loves to be brushed and loves affection and will rub up against you or nudge your hand for some love. He has been acquainted with young kids, elderly people, men/women and other dogs and does great. I do not know how he would react to cats. He did not like the vacuum or power tools but does just fine now. I think he had never been exposed to them. When we have a bonfire and get it first started he will try to bite the fire. Once, it gets hot he won’t bother it. So keep an eye on him. Smokey would not do good in a chaotic or loud environment. But, he will offer so much and would be a great addition to a small family. Overview:
The German Shepherd Dog, a truly iconic breed, originated in Germany in the late 19th century, primarily for herding sheep. They are easily recognizable by their athletic, medium-to-large build, typically weighing between 50-90 pounds, with a distinct double coat that can be black and tan, sable, or solid black. Known for their intelligence and loyalty, German Shepherds possess a remarkably trainable and courageous temperament, making them exceptional working dogs in fields like police and service work. While generally good with families when properly socialized, their high energy levels and need for mental stimulation make them unsuitable for apartment living without significant daily exercise. Prospective owners should be aware of common health concerns such as hip and elbow dysplasia, as well as degenerative myelopathy, underscoring the importance of responsible breeding and regular veterinary care.
