Description

Dog Breed: Beagle. Adoption Fee: $300.00. Brisket is such a loveable beagle boy, and also very amusing. His playful stunts and maneuvers keep his foster mom laughing. He really good at his hide and seek interactive toy and confounds his canine foster brother with fast directional switches mid run when playing chase. His joyful energy is even more impressive considering his bad leg. His orthopedic consult revealed that Brisket had suffered a traumatic injury a long time ago which led to a deformity of his right hip joint and contracture of his quadriceps mechanism, meaning his leg is stiff and unbending. Even though Brisket has learned to partially use the bad leg, the specialist believes that the uneven pressure on the tarsal joint of his other back leg will likely lead to chronic problems in the future. To prevent this, a limb amputation is recommended, as it was by the previous vet who saw him -- we wanted to be sure. Brisket is scheduled for his surgery on 2/26. Tripod dogs amaze us at how easily they accommodate and he is already most of the way there! He is a curious pup, always exploring and we are confident he will lead a normal and happy life on three legs! He does well with other dogs and, although friendly wth people, he’s a little hesitant just at first. Brisket has been fine with the cat in his foster home, although typical beagle, he does try to steal her food. He has improved dramatically with his house training from when he first arrived, and may need a refresher course when he gets to a new home. His foster mom allows him to sleep in the bed with her and does not crate him when he is left at home alone. He does have another dog's company when she is gone. Brisket is affectionate and cuddly but also a fairly high energy dog. We'd really like to see him have a fenced yard and we're not sure of his leash skills. He is heartworm negative and will be ready for a sleepover the first week in March.

Overview:

The Beagle is a beloved scent hound with a rich history, originally bred in England for hunting hare and rabbit. Their most recognizable physical traits include a sturdy, compact build, adorable floppy ears, and soulful brown or hazel eyes. Beagles typically weigh between 18-30 pounds and stand 13-16 inches tall, featuring a smooth, dense coat that comes in a variety of tri-color or bi-color patterns. In terms of temperament, they are known for being exceptionally friendly, curious, and outgoing, making them wonderful companions for families with children and other pets. However, their strong prey drive and inclination to follow interesting scents mean they require a securely fenced yard and consistent leash training. While adaptable, their need for exercise and tendency to vocalize (howl!) makes them less ideal for small apartment living unless daily walks and mental stimulation are guaranteed. Regarding health, Beagles can be prone to certain conditions like hip dysplasia, epilepsy, and intervertebral disc disease, making responsible breeding and regular veterinary check-ups important.
