Dog Breed: Pit Bull Terrier. Meet Jasper! Jasper is a handsome brindle pit mix, around 2 years old, with a heart as big as his puppy-dog eyes. His name was chosen through our recent naming fundraiser, and it suits him perfectly—he’s as special and memorable as the moment it was picked! This sweet boy is just starting to explore the world of commands. He tentatively knows sit, but he’s eager to learn more—especially if there’s a treat involved. Jasper is a total lovebug who melts for affection and can’t wait to share his heart with the right family. We’re still learning about Jasper’s likes, dislikes, and how he gets along with other dogs and cats. He will be formally tested soon, and we’ll update his profile with any new info. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
