Description
Dog Breed: German Shepherd Dog. Allie is about 4 years old. She is spayed, vaccinated, chipped, and ready to be adopted! She was found running loose with another dog and suffered a broken leg after being hit by a car. Her owners were located and unable to afford her surgery, so they surrendered her to VCA East in Santa Rosa. A good Samaritan stepped in and paid for the surgery, and the vet hospital reached out to us. She is a sweet dog who wants to be close to her people...like in your lap. She loves to carry around toys and will chase a ball. She is potty-trained and crate-trained, but we're not sure she's ever been walked on a leash before! Her foster home is working on training, and it will be a must for her adoptive family to do the same. She had small children in her previous family and another dog. We do not know about her behavior around cats. She will do her best to mesmerize you with her soft brown eyes and talk you out of your Cheetos, she likes them better than dog treats.

Overview:
The German Shepherd Dog, a truly iconic breed, originated in Germany in the late 19th century, primarily for herding sheep. They are easily recognizable by their athletic, medium-to-large build, typically weighing between 50-90 pounds, with a distinct double coat that can be black and tan, sable, or solid black. Known for their intelligence and loyalty, German Shepherds possess a remarkably trainable and courageous temperament, making them exceptional working dogs in fields like police and service work. While generally good with families when properly socialized, their high energy levels and need for mental stimulation make them unsuitable for apartment living without significant daily exercise. Prospective owners should be aware of common health concerns such as hip and elbow dysplasia, as well as degenerative myelopathy, underscoring the importance of responsible breeding and regular veterinary care.
