Description
Dog Breed: Rat Terrier. Meet Lola, a tiny rat terrier with a big personality just waiting to shine. She can be a little shy when meeting new people, but give her a bit of time and patience and she warms up quickly. Once she feels safe, Lola turns into a spirited, silly bundle of energy who loves to zoom around, play with toys, and snack on her favorite treats. While she's still getting to know you, it's best to keep handling gentle and limited. Lola can be sensitive in a few areas-especially her hind legs-so moving at her pace helps her feel secure. When she trusts you, though, she blossoms into a total cuddle bug who adores lap time, belly rubs, and being close to her favorite people. Because of her sensitivity with handling, Lola would be most comfortable in a home with children over the age of 10 who can interact respectfully and help her continue building confidence. She enjoys playing with other dogs, but she prefers not to share her space or belongings, so she'll do best as the only dog in the home, where she can soak up all the attention. Lola is currently available by appointment. If you'd like to learn more or schedule a time to meet this spunky little sweetheart, please contact the Behavior Helpline at (831) 708-5842.

Overview:
The Rat Terrier is a lively and intelligent American breed, originally developed in the early 20th century from a mix of Fox Terriers, Old English White Terriers, and other small terriers, primarily for farm work and pest control. These compact yet sturdy dogs typically weigh between 10-25 pounds and stand 10-18 inches tall, boasting a short, smooth coat that comes in a variety of patterns, often with large patches of color over white. Known for their energetic and inquisitive nature, Rat Terriers are remarkably adaptable and affectionate, making them excellent companions for active individuals or families. While their boundless energy necessitates regular exercise and mental stimulation, they can thrive in apartments provided their needs are met. Generally a healthy breed, they have a lifespan of 12-18 years, though some may be prone to patellar luxation or Legg-Calve-Perthes disease. Their friendly disposition and eagerness to please make them highly trainable and a joy to live with.
