Description

Dog Breed: Great Dane (short coat). ONLY AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION IN NEW JERSEY AND LOCAL SURROUNDING AREAS!!! If your application is a possible match, a volunteer will get back to you within 48 hrs. No inquiries, please, without an application. Gus is a 3-year-old Great Dane with the gentlest soul. Until very recently, his world was a dirt-floor basement in a rough urban area, living in truly deplorable conditions. No warmth. No comfort. No chance to just be a dog. We were able to get him out just before the snowstorm, but now he urgently needs what every dog deserves — a warm, quiet place to rest, recover, and finally exhale. Despite everything he’s endured, Gus is incredibly sweet, well-mannered, and affectionate. He is very thin and lacking muscle, clearly from a long period without proper nutrition or exercise, but he is food-motivated, eager to please, and so grateful for kindness. Gus did live with cats and other dogs previously, but right now we believe he would thrive best in a home where he can decompress on his own, at his own pace. He needs time to feel safe, to build strength, and to learn what a normal, loved life looks like. If you have room in your heart — and a warm spot in your home — to foster or adopt, you won’t just be giving him shelter. You’ll be giving him the chance to heal and discover the life he was always meant to have. If you are interested in Gus, please go to bfdaaa to complete application.

Great Dane

A.K.A.: German Mastiff, Deutsche Dogge, Dänische Dogge, Tigerdogge, Ulmer Dogge, Englische Dogge, Grand Danois, Dogue Allemand, Great German Dog, Apollo of Dogs, King of Hounds, Gentle Giant, Dane
Overview:

The Great Dane is an impressive and regal breed, often dubbed the "Apollo of Dogs" for its dignified stature and noble appearance. Originating in Germany, where it was historically bred for hunting boar, this giant breed is renowned for its immense size and striking presence. Physically, Great Danes are characterized by their tall, muscular build, short coat (available in various colors like fawn, brindle, black, blue, and harlequin), and expressive eyes. Despite their formidable size, they possess a surprisingly gentle and affectionate temperament, making them wonderful family companions. They are known for being patient with children and generally get along well with other pets. While their size might suggest otherwise, Great Danes can adapt to apartment living if provided with sufficient daily exercise, as they are not overly energetic indoors. However, prospective owners should be aware of certain health considerations, including a predisposition to bloat (gastric dilatation-volvulus), hip dysplasia, and certain heart conditions, necessitating careful breeding and regular veterinary check-ups. Overall, a Great Dane offers a loving and loyal addition to the right home.
