Description
Dog Breed: Terrier / Mixed (medium coat). “Hi” my name is Layla and I am a terrier mix born approx 4/14/25. I just arrived up here on Valentines Day from Arkansas and even like the snow. During my first snowfall, I was catching snowflakes in the air and had fun running around in it. The wet snow didn’t clump to my fur because it is a mix of mostly wire fur and some soft fur with a few cute beard tufts. BTW – did you see the white around my nose, back of head, chest, boots and tail tip? Sweet, affectionate, playful, a tail that wags most of the time, attentive, inquisitive, and being easy to love are just some of my characteristics. I still have some puppy traits and am learning quickly. Stuffed squeaky toys are great, and I’m smart enough to pull out the stuffing and squeaker; so other toys like braided ropes, nylabones, and stuffless squeakies have become my main play toys with others, or I can also entertain myself. I like to be around my people, trot between my foster parents and may whimper for a short time when one of them leaves. I also like to nap/watch TV with them on their bed, couch or on my bed. At bedtime, I “kennel up” with a treat and sleep in my kennel (rarely whimpering) and settle quickly for the night, even though I would probably prefer to sleep with my foster parents on their big bed. I may whimper in my kennel when they both leave but am quiet and settled when they return. When my foster mom prepares dinner, I initially walk around, sniff the air and watch her but then lie on the floor because I know that I won’t get people food even though I’m food motivated. My foster parents think it’s great that I don’t beg while they eat dinner (just a few puppy dog face looks), take treats with a gentle mouth, have learned to sit/wait until they put my dog food bowl down and am not defensive if you take away my food, toys or nylabone. Car rides are good. I initially sit to look out the window but then find my spot and lay down for the rest of the trip. When you get out of the vehicle, I also move to exit and am being trained on staying/waiting in the back seat to be escorted out. I walk well on a leash twice per day and don’t pull hard with a harness. When leash walking, I really like other people, am excited to see dogs and kids, but have not barked at them, and have gently taken treats from kids. I have also walked well next to another dog during a leash walk. My foster parents currently stand outside with me on a coated tie-out, but a fenced-in yard would be good for running, the zoomies, and doing the ‘outside business’. After my stressful initial trip and adjustments to MN from Arkansas, there were some potty accidents inside at first until my foster parents learned my signals and schedule. Now I potty outside on a schedule and occasionally on a puppy pad by the patio door. Can you believe that I am even starting to “go poop” on command when it’s starting to be that time? I am smart and will look towards a noise source in the house or when outside. When outside, I like to sit and also watch movement or the perimeter. When the neighbor dog barked at me, I answered with a few woofs and then quietly sat and watched as he ran and barked at me inside his fenced yard. Inside, I am learning the meaning of “friend” and “no bark” when I see people or dogs on the walking path, and I sometimes bark. I am currently the only dog in my temporary foster home. Every day I am quickly learning more, responding to corrections and am improving my sit, down, leave it, come, whistle response, sit by the door before going outside/my foster parents exit first, no and off [from jumping on people or a counter (rare)]. Can you imagine how great we can be together? I am willing; are you? Breed overview
Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
