Description
Dog Breed: Pit Bull Terrier (medium coat). OTHER PETS: Oxford was interested in meeting other dogs, and was eager to play! He matched well with the dogs he met and was able to take turns during play, even with a smaller dog. He's likely to get along with another dog in the home, but as always will need to meet any dogs he'll be living with prior to adoption. [Likely (Must Meet First)] OWNER EXPERIENCE: Someone that has experience with positive reinforcement or willingness to learn, as well as helping timid dogs adjust to new environments, would be ideal for Oxford. He can be nervous around new people--especially in unfamiliar places--and will do best with someone that can understand how to help him build some confidence. [Some Experience] KIDS: Oxford is a naturally timid dog, and can be fearful of noises. He can also be a bit mouthy with people when he's comfortable and excited, but can be redirected easily. He would likely do best in a quieter home with kids that are old enough to understand how to interact with him and when to let him have his own space. [10+ (Must Meet First)] ACTIVITY LEVEL: Oxford has shown some interest in toys and playing during his time at TJO, but is still fairly timid. It's possible that his energy level could change once he gets settled into a home environment, but at the moment he's more than happy to hang out with his favorite people and enjoy some treats. A combination of regular exercise and mental enrichment such as puzzles and games will help fully meet his needs, and provide appropriate outlets for mouthiness when it occurs. [Couch Potato / Good Walking Buddy] VETERINARY CARE: Oxford is currently working on gaining some weight, but otherwise seems to be in good health. Routine appointments with an established vet will help to ensure that he remains healthy and up to date on preventatives. [Routine] LEVEL OF TRAINING NEEDED: Oxford is beginning his positive reinforcement journey, and will do best learning with someone who can offer patience while he adjusts. Positive reinforcement training will help Oxford not only learn basic cues/skills and some fun tricks, but will also help him to feel more comfortable and confident in himself! It will provide a good opportunity for him to bond with his new guardian as well. [Moderate] GROOMING: Routine brushing will help to minimize shedding in the home. [Minimal]

Breed overview
Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
