Dog Breed: Australian Shepherd (medium coat). Miles’ adoption is pending. H e is getting a chance to see if he will work out with a prospective adopter. They took advantage of our Foster - to Adopt program to give him a try in their own home. Miles is a very nice, sweet, 3 year old Red Merle Aussie. Because of some life changes, his owners can no longer care for him. Miles walks well on a leash, sits, and stays. He loves to play fetch and go on hikes. Miles is very smart, typical of his breed. Miles will be your loyal companion and would love to join you on your next adventure! All dogs are vaccinated, microchipped and spayed or neutered (if they are old enough) before they leave the shelter. If the dog is not old enough, you will be given a voucher for Animal Medical Center in Emmett to cover the cost of the spay or neuter. Please fill out an application if you are interested in this dog or call us today for more information. Because we are an all-volunteer organization, please call ahead to schedule a time for a Meet & Greet so we can ensure a dog handler is available to show you the dog or dogs you are interested in. Overview:
The Australian Shepherd, despite its name, actually originated in the western United States during the 19th century, bred primarily for herding livestock on ranches. These striking dogs are medium-sized with a sturdy build, often sporting captivating merle coats (blue or red) and piercing blue, amber, or marbled eyes, sometimes with two different colors (heterochromia). Known for their exceptional intelligence and high energy, Aussies possess a strong work drive and thrive on having a "job" to do, whether it's agility, obedience, or extensive exercise. Their temperament is generally loyal, affectionate, and good-natured with their families, though they can be reserved with strangers. Due to their high exercise requirements and need for mental stimulation, they are best suited for active families or individuals with ample outdoor space and a commitment to training; apartment living is generally not ideal. Potential owners should also be aware of common health concerns like hip and elbow dysplasia and certain eye conditions, including Collie Eye Anomaly (CEA) and Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA).
