Description
Dog Breed: Rat Terrier / Jack Russell Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Here's Tootsie! This 8-year-old, 20 lb. rattie mix is as sweet as a Tootsie pop and the perfect combination of laid back and "let's go"! At home she's an affectionate, well-behaved little girl who sits as close as possible to foster mom and sneaks in as many kisses as she can. Once the leash and the car keys come out, she dances enthusiastically because she knows we're going to the park, where she happily romps on the trails. She is fine on leash, but because her recall is so good, she gets much of her walks off leash (in a securely fenced area of course), and she can explore to her heart's content. Tootsie is house-trained on a schedule and is learning to signal when she needs to go out. She is most comfortable and reliable taking care of business in the yard, and she likes to spend time outside, so a fenced yard would be a big plus for everyone. She is friendly with people and other dogs once introduced. She was used to being part of a pack and she gets along nicely with her foster brother, so she'd do well with a canine sibling. This gentle girl is very attached to her person, and she'll do best in a situation where someone is home most of the time. She wants to be next to you on the couch the minute you sit down, and she snuggles in at night, quiet as a mouse and just happy to be close to you. Breed overview
Overview:
The Jack-Rat Terrier, a captivating crossbreed of the Rat Terrier and Jack Russell Terrier, originated from the desire to combine the best traits of its energetic parents. These medium-sized dogs typically sport a short, smooth coat in various colors, often with distinctive markings, and possess a lean, muscular build. Temperamentally, they are known for being intelligent, highly energetic, and affectionate, making them a lively addition to the right household. While their size might suggest apartment living is possible, their significant exercise needs mean they thrive with a yard and an active family committed to daily walks and playtime. They are generally good with children and other pets when properly socialized, but their strong prey drive requires careful supervision around smaller animals. Health-wise, they are generally robust but can inherit predispositions to conditions like luxating patella or leg-calve-perthes disease, common in their parent breeds. Early training and consistent mental stimulation are crucial for a well-adjusted Jack-Rat Terrier.
