Description
Dog Breed: German Shepherd Dog. A few weeks ago, we welcomed a litter of seven 6-week-old puppies (6 girls and 1 boy) into our care. All of them had upper respiratory infections and had already been receiving doxycycline at the shelter. Each puppy required a second round of antibiotics after the initial seven-day treatment. Fortunately, they were spared from strep zoo during their stay at the shelter, despite their compromised immune systems due to the respiratory infections. As a preventive measure, they also received an antibiotic shot because the shelter had closed due to a strep zoo outbreak. We held our breath for 10 days and were relieved when none of the puppies showed signs of strep zoo, ensuring the safety of our resident dogs as well. The puppies were placed in pairs in foster homes, and each one has visited the vet for their 8-week check-ups, boosters, deworming, and preventative care. All are now healthy, adorable little bundles of joy. Thanks to the dedicated shelter staff and volunteers, the puppies received excellent care during their time at the shelter, where they grew and weaned from their mother before arriving in our care. The mother has since been adopted through the shelter. When the entire litter arrived, they were fully weaned and happily enjoying softened kibble mixed with canned food, which is typical for 6-week-olds. Despite having runny noses and congestion from the upper respiratory infection, their appetites remained strong. They were happy, brave pups with outgoing, social personalities. In their foster homes, they have continued to thrive as playful pups full of mischief and love. Now that they are 9 weeks old, they are ready to find their forever homes. We have given them lots of love and snuggles while introducing them to the wider world through outings. They are learning to navigate stairs, potty train, exhibit household manners, take car rides, and coexist with other dogs, cats, and children, depending on their foster home. Saige and Echoe, two of the puppies, are currently living with two resident dogs, a cat, and a delightful young boy, enjoying plenty of outings in their foster home. Saige, who sports a white collar with red snowmen, loves her crate in the pen area for meals and prefers to sleep in the large pen where her crate is located. Although she has been a bit slower to grasp potty training, she uses the litter box in her pen area during downtime. Playing and having fun are her top priorities, and while she sometimes realizes she needs to go out, she can't always make it in time. However, she has taken to car rides with ease, while Echoe was not a fan at first. Another way to tell Saige and Echoe apart is through Saige's brown eyebrows versus Echoe's all-black head. Echoe also has darker legs. Both puppies love to sit for attention and are generously rewarded for it. They are learning to wear a leash by having it clipped and unclipped while moving around, before we advance to actually using it. They are accustomed to regular nail trims and are easy to handle and calm. We are looking to find them homes with individuals who are experienced with German Shepherds and can provide the time and resources necessary for training, positive environmental exposure, and the structure German Shepherds need to thrive and develop into well-balanced companions. Overview:
The German Shepherd Dog, a truly iconic breed, originated in Germany in the late 19th century, primarily for herding sheep. They are easily recognizable by their athletic, medium-to-large build, typically weighing between 50-90 pounds, with a distinct double coat that can be black and tan, sable, or solid black. Known for their intelligence and loyalty, German Shepherds possess a remarkably trainable and courageous temperament, making them exceptional working dogs in fields like police and service work. While generally good with families when properly socialized, their high energy levels and need for mental stimulation make them unsuitable for apartment living without significant daily exercise. Prospective owners should be aware of common health concerns such as hip and elbow dysplasia, as well as degenerative myelopathy, underscoring the importance of responsible breeding and regular veterinary care.
