Dog Breed: Pit Bull Terrier. Currently located at our Owensboro, KY location Meet Mirasol! Mirasol is a beautiful 1-year-old Pit Bull Terrier weighing around 40 pounds. She is fully vetted, spayed, heartworm negative, and ready to find a home where she can feel safe, loved, and understood. Mirasol's journey hasn't been an easy one. She came into our care after being pepper sprayed during a dog fight where another dog would not let go of her. Since that traumatic experience, Mirasol has made it clear that she prefers not to be around other dogs. While she may not want canine companions, Mirasol has plenty of love to give her people. She is affectionate and enjoys spending time with those she trusts. However, she can be protective of her kennel and personal space, so she will do best with a family that respects her boundaries and understands her needs. A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
