Description
Dog Breed: Shih Tzu (medium coat). Approx. DOB: 7/3/23 Approx Weight: 9.68 Lbs. Adoption Fee: $300 includes a 2 week trial to ensure everyone's happiness! Meet Big Red Don’t let the name fool you — he’s called Big Red, and while he may be small in size, he’s absolutely huge in heart! Big Red is an almost 3-year-old Shih Tzu (he turns three in July!) weighing just under 10 pounds of pure sweetness. This little guy may be small, but his gentle spirit is something truly special. Big Red was released by a breeder who said he was “too timid” — but we see something very different. We see a sensitive, tender-hearted boy who just needed kindness, patience, and a safe place to land. He absolutely loves other dogs and truly thrives around them — especially little dogs he can play and explore with. Having a confident canine buddy (or two!) in his forever home is a must. Other dogs help him feel safe, teach him the ropes, and bring out his happiest, most playful self. One of Big Red’s favorite things to do is putter around in the backyard, sniffing and exploring every corner. A securely fenced yard is important for him so he can safely enjoy his curious little adventures. Big Red is crate trained and doing very well with housetraining when kept on a consistent schedule. He will need continued patience and routine as he masters this skill in his new home. He is still shy with people, but he is so close to a breakthrough. His foster mom says that when you talk sweetly to him, his tail starts wagging and his whole back end wiggles with happiness. It’s the most heart-melting thing to see. With gentle encouragement and time, he is going to blossom into an incredibly devoted companion. When Big Red arrived in rescue, he was severely matted and needed a full shave-down. His coat is currently short, but as a Shih Tzu he will require professional grooming every 4–6 weeks to keep him comfortable and looking his best. He was neutered and had a dental at that time, and he did lose a few teeth — but he is feeling so much better now! Big Red would do best in: A home with another small dog (or dogs) A securely fenced yard A patient, gentle family willing to let him build confidence at his own pace A quieter home environment where he can continue to blossom With a little love and understanding, Big Red is going to make an incredibly rewarding addition to a very lucky family. Watching him gain confidence is truly magical — and his forever family will get to be part of that beautiful journey. I have been neutered, vaccinated, heartworm tested negative, wormed and microchipped. Overview:
The Shih Tzu, affectionately known as the "lion dog," boasts an ancient and regal lineage, originating from the Tibetan plateau and further refined in imperial China. These charming canines are easily recognized by their striking appearance: a small, sturdy build, a distinctive undershot jaw, and a long, flowing double coat that often requires regular grooming to prevent matting. Temperamentally, Shih Tzus are renowned for being affectionate, outgoing, and playful companions, making them wonderfully suitable for a variety of households. Their adaptable and generally good-natured disposition means they often thrive in families with children and are particularly well-suited for apartment living due to their modest exercise requirements. While generally robust, potential owners should be aware of common breed-specific health concerns, including respiratory issues (due to their brachycephalic, or "smushed" face), eye conditions, and luxating patella. Despite these considerations, a Shih Tzu typically brings immense joy and companionship to their devoted owners.
