Description
Dog Breed: Basset Hound. Adoption Fee: $450. Cleo is a 5 1/2 year old female basset, who, along with her basset pal, Mosho, was surrendered to GGBR. Initially timid, Cleo has really warmed up and has become more outgoing in her foster home. Her previous owner mentioned that Cleo is afraid of men, but since there are no men in Cleo's foster home, we can't be sure whether that is still the case. Cleo and Mosho came from a home with children, but because Cleo tends to jump on people, which could frighten, or knock over a very young child, she is recommended for older children, or adults. Cleo is an adept and determined counter-surfer, which her foster home is working on! Her previous owner said that Cleo gets along well with other dogs, but she should be separated if offering "high-value" treats, such as bones. Cleo is potty-trained. Cleo would be fine in a home with a doggie playmate, or as an only dog. Cleo has an anomaly on her lovely basset nose that will be fine as long as the new adopter knows not to let her sunbathe outside. Her very delicate pink nose could become inflamed and infected.

Overview:
The Basset Hound is a charming and distinctive breed, originating in France as a scent hound primarily used for hunting hare and rabbit. Easily recognized by their long, droopy ears, sad-looking eyes, and short, sturdy legs, they possess an incredibly powerful sense of smell. Despite their somewhat mournful expression, Bassets are known for their gentle, laid-back, and affectionate temperament, making them wonderful companions for families. They are generally good with children and other pets, though their stubborn streak and loud baying bark require consistent training. While they can adapt to apartment living with sufficient daily exercise, their tendency to follow their nose means a secure yard is essential. Potential owners should be aware of common health concerns such as ear infections due to their long ears, back issues, and bloat. Overall, the Basset Hound is a loyal and loving, if sometimes comically determined, addition to many homes.
