Duchess – Black Female, 1 year, 60 lbs. The Duchess of Playfulness and Athleticism is ready to find her forever family. She’s a beautifully all-black, muscular build of approx. 60lbs and just nearly 12 months. With hazel eyes as round as marbles and all labby looks, this girl is ready for the royal ball. (Quite literally, she loves to retrieve!) Duchess is looking for a family with any age children, dogs, or cats… as long as they are ready to hit the road on many adventures. Or an owner that will keep her enthusiasm entertained with lots to do. Like most dogs of royalty, she is the center of attention and thinks all children are puppies like her- ready to jump, chase, play and lick. She loves to smother infants and toddlers and that affection can get Duchess ready for wild jumps- so keep a close eye. Tug of war is a favorite past time and she respects her humans’ toys, as long as they are put away and clean. She expects her meals delivered strictly to her crate where she gladly sits to wait, however, scarfing down those meals is no problem. She’s respectful to other dogs during meal time as well, but will do cartwheels for snacks and treats - once even leaping over her very large foster brother! Duchess has a strong nose, so sniffing out goodies is her specialty. Duchess enjoys a leashed walk, and does best with routine and strict, consistent rules. Watch out around open doors because she likes to escape the castle once in a while. Cats are no bother to her but fun to watch…unfortunately Duchess energy is far beyond kitten tolerance. She is best in the outdoors where she can let her hair down, balanced with a good snuggle on a lap or couch. She has mastered crate sleeping, sit, and lay down. And like her other Labrador constituents, Duchess will require ongoing manners and refinement training. Overview:
The Labrador Retriever, a beloved and highly popular breed, originated in Newfoundland, Canada, where they were initially bred to assist fishermen by retrieving nets and stray fish. Physically, they are medium-to-large dogs, known for their strong, athletic build, short, dense, weather-resistant double coat (commonly seen in black, yellow, or chocolate), and their distinctive "otter" tail. Temperamentally, Labs are celebrated for their friendly, outgoing, and good-natured disposition, making them exceptional family companions. Their intelligence and eagerness to please contribute to their trainability, though they do require consistent exercise to prevent boredom and destructive behaviors. While adaptable, their energy levels make them more suited to homes with yards, or highly active families, rather than apartment living, unless daily extensive exercise is guaranteed. Regarding health, Labs can be prone to certain conditions like hip and elbow dysplasia, and some eye conditions, so responsible breeding practices are crucial. Overall, their loyalty, versatility, and affectionate nature firmly establish the Labrador Retriever as a wonderful addition to many households.
