Name: Chewy Best Guess for Breed: Yorkie mix Best Guess for Age: 2 years as of March 2026 SEX: Male Approximate Weight: 10 lbs Gets Along With: Other dogs! We haven't seen him with cats or kids but we are happy to discuss integration techniques with any potential adopters! Currently Living at: South Carolina shelter - needs a foster or forever home in the DC area to get up here! Chewy is Looking For: His forever home! This small sweetie landed in the shelter through no faly of his own. He's eager to once again have his own humans. He's young, hasn't seen nearly enough of the world yet, and is eager for long sniffy walks and romps and all the adventures his new family can dream up. And snuggles. Definitely snuggles. Most of all, though, he wants to know where he belongs and to be safe and loved for all his days. In exchange he promises so many adoring gazes, so much loyal companionship. What do you say? A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
