Description

Dog Breed: Akita (medium coat). OTHER PETS: Balto enjoys other dogs and engages well with them even if there is a size difference (he loves the little ones!) Balto also stays relaxed and does not engage when other dogs are too pushy. He would likely do well with another dog of a similarly relaxed yet playful attitude. [Likely (Must Meet First)] OWNER EXPERIENCE: Balto is a friendly and outgoing dog who presents as having experience with some skills (knows sit & paw, walks well on leash, takes treats gently.) He is also a big dog whose ideal person is experienced with positive reinforcement or willingness to learn, (and currently capable of) handling physically strong dogs. [Very Experienced] KIDS: Balto enjoys being outside and is playful with a variety of toys, he solicits attention from humans and dogs and shows his excitement with bounces. He would likely get along with most humans, but because he is uncomfortable with being touched around his back legs and he is a bouncy large dog his best fit would be with humans who were able to play with him and respect his boundaries. [10+ (Must Meet First)] ACTIVITY LEVEL: Balto enjoys spending a lot of time outside (his double coat keeps him comfortable in the snow) his ideal home would have a safe space for him to spend lots of time outside. While at TJO Balto has always been ready for a walk or to spend time in an outdoor run playing with toys & enjoying the snow. He would do well with a combination of regular exercise & mental stimulation such as playtime, tricks, and food puzzles, and time to enjoy the outdoors. [Good Walking Buddy] VETERINARY CARE: [Routine] LEVEL OF TRAINING NEEDED: Positive reinforcement training will help Balto bond with his new owner as well as learn new skills and fun tricks while building confidence. [Moderate] GROOMING: Routine brushing will keep Balto's coat clean and matt-free; when double coated dogs blow their coats sometimes their owners choose to have a professional groomer assist. [Regular Brushing]

Akita

A.K.A.: Akita Inu, Japanese Akita, Great Japanese Dog, American Akita, Akita Ken, Akita dog, Matagi Inu, Odate-inu, Odate dog
Overview:

The Akita is a majestic and powerful breed originating from the mountainous regions of Japan, initially bred for hunting large game like bears and wild boar. Physically, they are easily recognizable by their substantial size, typically weighing between 70-130 pounds, and their dense double coat, which comes in various colors including red, fawn, sesame, white, and brindle. They possess a distinctive curled tail and a broad, triangular head with small, erect ears. In terms of temperament, Akitas are known for being loyal, courageous, and often described as "cat-like" in their independence and fastidiousness. While deeply devoted to their families, they can be reserved and even wary of strangers, requiring early socialization to ensure a well-adjusted adult. Due to their strong prey drive and independent nature, they are generally not recommended for first-time dog owners and thrive with experienced handlers. They can be good family dogs for those who understand their need for personal space and consistent training, but their size and sometimes aloof nature make them less suitable for apartment living without significant daily exercise. Health-wise, the breed can be prone to conditions such as hip and elbow dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, and autoimmune disorders like Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada syndrome.
