One thing you’ll notice about Bella is that she’s missing her back left foot. We don’t know what happened to cause it, but what we do know is that Bella doesn’t let it slow her down one bit. She gets around wonderfully and moves well, adapting like the resilient girl she is. Volunteers describe Bella as calm, gentle, and incredibly sweet. She enjoys affection and has a soft, loving presence that makes people fall for her quickly. She’s the kind of dog who seems grateful for every kind touch. Bella deserves a home where someone sees her not for what she’s missing, but for the beautiful, loving dog she is. Her little difference just makes her extra special. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
