Schnitzel | 4-Year-Old Cairn Terrier/Chihuahua Mix | Tiny Snuggle Bug with a Big Heart Schnitzel—affectionately known as Baby Chewy—is a 4-year-old Cairn Terrier/Chihuahua mix weighing just 9 pounds. With his scruffy tan coat and sweet personality, this little guy is equal parts adorable and endearing. He’s a gentle, affectionate and playful pup who enjoys cuddling with his people and playing with dog friends. Housetraining is still a work in progress, but he is making great strides! He can stay home alone for several hours with other dogs in the house and has proven to be a perfect angel while his humans are away. He isn’t currently using a crate and typically sleeps through the night—often snuggled under the covers or on a dog bed nearby. Before coming into foster care, Schnitzel had likely never been on a leash or taken for walks. His first walk was a bit confusing for him, but he has quickly improved and now does much better, especially when walking alongside other dogs and learning from them. He enjoys short strolls and playtime but also has a relaxed side and is happy to settle in for some quiet time with his people. Schnitzel gets along well with other dogs and especially enjoys having playmates. He can be a little vocal when meeting new dogs or people, but once he gets to know them, he warms up quickly and becomes fast friends. He has also had positive interactions with cats and mostly ignores them. Although he hasn’t met children yet, his foster believes his gentle and easygoing nature would make him a good companion for kids. Schnitzel loves toys, chewing on bones, and playing tug-of-war with other dogs. He’s highly motivated by food, toys, and affection—and he’s not picky about treats. Carrots and zucchini are just as exciting to him as traditional dog treats. Schnitzel came from a difficult situation. He and seven other dogs were confiscated from a home during an eviction after authorities discovered they had been living together in extremely poor conditions. The dogs appeared to have been confined together in a single kennel, and they arrived at the shelter malnourished, with urine-stained fur and signs of neglect. When Schnitzel first arrived in foster care, his skin was irritated and his coat was patchy with sores. With proper care, his skin has healed and his fur is growing back beautifully. Despite his rough start, Schnitzel has proven to be a resilient, loving little dog who simply wants a safe home and people to love. His ideal home would include another playful dog to keep him company, though most importantly he just needs a family that will continue to show him the comfort and kindness he deserves.
