Description
Dog Breed: Chihuahua (short coat). Karen found herself in a high kill shelter in Texas, not once, but twice. First in 2020 when she was 5. And then again in 2026 at the age of 11. Thankfully, she has joined the Northstar family and is happy to be in a foster home, never to return to the shelter. Karen is a spry little lady who still has a pep in her step. She weighs in at a 5.4 pounds as of 3/16. She needs a dental as her teeth are not in good shape and she has what appears to be a mammary mass on her tummy. We will get her to the vet asap and get her health issues taken care of. She has already met one of the resident dogs at her foster home and was very polite. And her foster mom says she walks perfectly on a leash. Stay tuned for more updates on this sweet girl! If you'd like to apply to adopt this gal, please fill out an adoption application at .northstarpets and be sure to ask for her by name - KAREN TX!

Overview:
The Chihuahua, a captivating breed known for its diminutive size, boasts an ancient and somewhat mysterious origin, with most theories pointing to Mexico as its birthplace, potentially descending from the "Techichi," a small companion dog of the Toltec civilization. Physically, they are easily recognizable by their small, compact bodies, large expressive eyes, and erect ears, appearing in both smooth and long-coated varieties, showcasing a vast array of colors and markings. Despite their tiny stature, Chihuahuas possess a big personality; they are often described as spirited, alert, and fiercely loyal to their owners, sometimes displaying a bold and confident demeanor. While their small size makes them exceptionally well-suited for apartment living, they thrive in homes where they receive ample attention and mental stimulation. They can be good family pets for older children who understand how to interact gently with a small dog, but their delicate build makes them less suitable for boisterous toddlers. Regarding health, Chihuahuas can be prone to certain conditions like patellar luxation, heart problems, and dental issues, making regular veterinary check-ups crucial for their well-being.
