Description

Dog Breed: Treeing Walker Coonhound / Mixed (short coat). Please contact Paul Slebzak (paulsluckydoganimalrescue) for more information about this pet. pretty hound ISO fresh start and love! LADY BIRD NEEDS A FOREVER HOME!!!! Name: Lady Bird Best Guess for Breed: Treeing walker coonhound mix Best Guess for Age: 6 years 9 months as of April 2026 SEX: Female Approximate Weight: 52 lbs Gets Along With: Other dogs! We haven't seen her with cats or kids but we are happy to discuss integration techniques with any potential adopters! Currently Living at: DC area foster home Special adoption considerations: Lady Bird is a truly Lucky Dog. She tested positive for heartworms, but landed in a place where heartworm treatment is provided! Heartworm is not contagious to people or other pets, but results from mosquito bites. Heartworm, if left untreated, is life threatening, but after treatment, dogs that were heartworm positive should suffer no significant long-term effects so long as they are kept on a monthly heartworm preventative. Heartworm dogs can resume full active and normal lives, but need to be kept calm for 4-6 weeks after treatment. We are happy to discuss where in the treatment process this Lucky Dog is in right now! Just email the adoption coordinator - the address is at lower left! Lady Bird is Looking For: Her forever home! Lady Bird landed in the shelter through no fault of her own and she's eager to once again have her own humans. For sniffy walks (that hound nose - IYKYK!) and world exploration and quality kibble and a cushy dog bed, yes. But as an experienced dog, she knows what's most important in life: Knowing where she belongs, being safe and loved. What do you say? Are you her fresh start? Is she the one you see by your side? What My Foster Says About Me: As of May 4, 2026, I’ve had the pleasure of fostering Lady Bird for just a few days, and even in this short time, she has quietly started to show who she really is, and it is very special. When she first arrived, Lady Bird kept to herself, finding comfort in her crate and watching the world from a safe distance. Everything was new and a bit overwhelming, but even then, you could see her gentle, sweet nature just beneath the surface. She is still decompressing and building confidence, but each day she’s taking small, meaningful steps forward. Lady Bird is very much a hound at heart. She loves to take her time outside, following her nose and exploring the world at her own pace. She has a particular interest in sniffing cars (minivans especially) and while she’s still building confidence in new environments, she becomes more curious and engaged once she’s outside. Inside the home, Lady Bird currently prefers her crate as her safe space and does best when it is partially covered, which helps her feel secure. She is also a big napper (and snorer) and spends a lot of her day resting and recharging, which seems to help her process everything around her. That said, she is beginning to branch out! Today she went up and down the stairs on her own and, for the first time, chose to settle on the couch after I showed her that she was allowed. After a while, she quietly shifted closer, rested against me, and fell asleep. It was a small but incredibly meaningful moment of trust. Lady Bird is the kind of dog who doesn’t rush into things. She may not always ask for attention, but when she feels safe and you show her that she is allowed to want things, she truly melts into her surroundings. She is very gentle and has shown polite interest in other dogs, as she enjoys a quick sniff and then moves on. As a former mom, she seems to have a soft spot for younger dogs and calmly notices children on walks, standing still so they can pet her. She is also still working on eating consistently and can sometimes eat or drink too quickly when she does, so smaller, more frequent meals have been helpful. Lucky Dog cannot guarantee any dog is housebroken. All of our dogs are working on their crate training. TO ADOPT: The adoption fee for this dog is $475, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations, spay/neuter, and heartworm treatment.
