The American Foxhound, a quintessential American breed, boasts a rich history originating from English Foxhounds brought to the colonies in the 17th century for fox hunting. Physically, they are athletic and well-muscled, typically standing 21-25 inches at the shoulder and weighing 45-70 pounds, with a short, hard coat often seen in tricolor (black, white, and tan) or a combination of white and any other color. Temperamentally, they are known for being friendly, easygoing, and independent, possessing a strong prey drive and a characteristic, melodious "bay." While their gentle nature can make them suitable for active families, their high energy and need for vast exercise make them unsuitable for apartment living and require a secure, spacious yard.
