Description
Dog Breed: German Shorthaired Pointer / Labrador Retriever / Mixed (medium coat). Moose's life has been a bit of a rollercoaster - this is his second time through TJO and we are SO HAPPY that he came back! Moose was adopted by a wonderful human who has since passed away. Moose's extended family stepped up but he did not get along with the resident cats and so they contacted TJO for help. Moose is now back in a safe place he knows to wait for his next human bestie. OTHER PETS: Moose is friendly and wants to play with other dogs, but does not take feedback well and is occasionally pushy or rude (like putting a paw on the other dog's back.) Moose would do BEST as an only dog; however he may do well with a confident, tolerant dog. [Case-by-Case (MUST Meet First)] NO CATS OWNER EXPERIENCE: [First Dog] KIDS: Moose is a relaxed, friendly dog who would has lived with children and would likely continue to do well with humans of all sizes. [Likely (Must Meet First)] ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moose enjoys getting outside, but does not seem to like inclement weather too much. He is working on loose leash walking, so hitting the walking paths is a great way to keep improving Moose's leash walking skills with positive reinforcement. He enjoys playing with humans and is goofy. A combination of physical exercise and plenty of mental enrichment will help fully meet his needs. [Good Walking Buddy] VETERINARY CARE: Moose had surgery his first time through TJO for an ear hematoma. While he does not have any acute medical concerns, he does have a history of chronic ear infections. A good relationship with a vet will be necessary to keep Moose healthy as he ages. [ABOVE AVERAGE] LEVEL OF TRAINING NEEDED: Positive reinforcement training will help Moose bond with his new owner as well as help him learn important skills and fun tricks while building confidence. [Minimal] GROOMING: [Minimal]

Breed overview
Overview:
The German Shorthaired Lab, a dynamic hybrid blending the best of the German Shorthaired Pointer and Labrador Retriever, originated from the desire to combine the two breeds' esteemed hunting abilities and friendly dispositions. Physically, these medium to large dogs typically boast a muscular, athletic build with a short, dense coat, often found in shades of black, brown, yellow, or liver, and sometimes with the GSP's characteristic ticking. Their temperament is a delightful mix of the Lab's unwavering loyalty and the GSP's keen intelligence and boundless energy. They are generally affectionate, trainable, and eager to please, making them fantastic companions for active families. Due to their high exercise requirements and need for mental stimulation, they are unsuitable for apartment living and thrive in homes with yards and access to regular outdoor activities. Health-wise, like their parent breeds, they can be prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, eye conditions, and certain heart issues, so responsible breeding and regular vet check-ups are crucial.
