Description

Dog Breed: Rat Terrier (short coat). Gouda is a precious 2-year-old Teddy Roosevelt terrier who is just as sweet as can be. She is sociable, loves people, and is great with children. She is also dog and cat friendly. Easy-going and adaptable, Gouda transitioned into her foster home with ease, greeting everyone with polite interest and quickly learning the routine. Her house-training has been perfect, as have her house manners. When it's bed time, she goes into her crate and is calm and quiet there all night long. Come daytime, she is rarin’ to go, eager to trot around the yard and romp with the other dogs but then is soon ready for one of her many daytime naps. While Gouda is a confident leash walker, she does tend to pull a bit and, at 27 lbs., her opinion on where to stop and sniff carries some weight! We learned that Gouda already knows several tricks, including "sit", "lie down", "wait", and "shake", plus she comes when called (usually) and knows how to use a doggie door! Rat Terrier

A.K.A.: American Rat Terrier, Rattie, Feist, Ratting Terrier, Ratting Feist, Decker Terrier
Overview:

The Rat Terrier is a lively and intelligent American breed, originally developed in the early 20th century from a mix of Fox Terriers, Old English White Terriers, and other small terriers, primarily for farm work and pest control. These compact yet sturdy dogs typically weigh between 10-25 pounds and stand 10-18 inches tall, boasting a short, smooth coat that comes in a variety of patterns, often with large patches of color over white. Known for their energetic and inquisitive nature, Rat Terriers are remarkably adaptable and affectionate, making them excellent companions for active individuals or families. While their boundless energy necessitates regular exercise and mental stimulation, they can thrive in apartments provided their needs are met. Generally a healthy breed, they have a lifespan of 12-18 years, though some may be prone to patellar luxation or Legg-Calve-Perthes disease. Their friendly disposition and eagerness to please make them highly trainable and a joy to live with.
