All of our dogs are in foster homes and not in one single kennel location. Adoption events is the best way to meet several of our dogs at once. Seamus (‘Shay-mus’) is a captivating 2 year old black German Shepherd mix weighing 85 solid pounds. Despite his formidable appearance, he has a tender soul and wears his heart on his sleeve dearly hoping to be embraced. This guy is highly social and won’t hesitate to say hello to any human or canine he sees. On initial greetings, he tends to invite himself into other dogs’ bubble without permission, but will rapidly adapt to their protest with humble submission, only to try again with a more subtle approach. Guidance from his human will help him to develop patient social skills which is important given his large size. Once he feels comfortable, Seamus reveals his goofy nature and finds himself engaging in bouts of chase and play. In the home setting, Seamus falls right into place. He spends much of his time laying quietly near his human or on his dog bed, frequently enjoying a Nyla bone. He is not obsessed with toys, and will not hover to claim them. Instead, his needs are more focused on collecting gentle pets, belly rubs, and receiving words of admiration from his people. This boy has a puppy-personality and doesn’t seem to take life seriously. Call his name or share warm eye-contact and his tail will instantly wag in anticipation for ‘what’s next’? Seamus is currently undergoing treatment for Heartworm infection. Although this is a prolonged course that will require limited activity, he is tolerating it well and does not seem to bother his routine one bit. He is learning to enjoy car rides where he will lay calmly during his ride. This guy is also accustomed to using a dog door and willingly enters his crate at night for a sound night’s sleep. Few canines are as exceptionally affectionate and eager to please as this boy. He will fit into a family of structure and fun with grateful joy. Overview:
The German Shepherd Dog, a truly iconic breed, originated in Germany in the late 19th century, primarily for herding sheep. They are easily recognizable by their athletic, medium-to-large build, typically weighing between 50-90 pounds, with a distinct double coat that can be black and tan, sable, or solid black. Known for their intelligence and loyalty, German Shepherds possess a remarkably trainable and courageous temperament, making them exceptional working dogs in fields like police and service work. While generally good with families when properly socialized, their high energy levels and need for mental stimulation make them unsuitable for apartment living without significant daily exercise. Prospective owners should be aware of common health concerns such as hip and elbow dysplasia, as well as degenerative myelopathy, underscoring the importance of responsible breeding and regular veterinary care.
