Description

Dog Breed: German Shepherd Dog (medium coat). Meet your new best friend, Pinocchio! This handsome 2-year-old, 64 pound German Shepherd is equal parts playful companion and loyal cuddle buddy. He has lots of energy and absolutely loves to run, play, and be part of the action—so a home with a securely fenced yard (6 foot preferred) would be his dream come true. Pinocchio is housebroken and crate trained and thrives on companionship. He would do best with someone who works from home or is around often, as he can become anxious or bored when left alone for long periods. With the right routine and attention, he truly shines and forms a deep bond with his person. He’s currently living with a female German Shepherd and does great with her, and while he does like to chase the cat, it’s more playful curiosity than aggression. He would do best in a home without small children, where he can feel comfortable and understood. At his core, he’s a sweet, affectionate dog who loves to snuggle just as much as he loves to play. If you’re looking for a loyal companion who will stick by your side, keep you active, and shower you with love—he might just be the perfect match for you. Interested in making Pinocchio part of your family? Contact your adoption coordinator. If you do not yet have an adoption coordinator, please complete an adoption application at .freedomgermanshepherdrescue. Pinocchio is being fostered outside of Charleston, SC.

German Shepherd Dog

A.K.A.: Alsatian, Alsatian Wolf Dog, Shepherd Dog, GSD, Deutscher Schäferhund, Schäferhund, Berger Allemand, Pastore Tedesco, Perro de Pastor Alemán, Alsatian Dog
Overview:

The German Shepherd Dog, a truly iconic breed, originated in Germany in the late 19th century, primarily for herding sheep. They are easily recognizable by their athletic, medium-to-large build, typically weighing between 50-90 pounds, with a distinct double coat that can be black and tan, sable, or solid black. Known for their intelligence and loyalty, German Shepherds possess a remarkably trainable and courageous temperament, making them exceptional working dogs in fields like police and service work. While generally good with families when properly socialized, their high energy levels and need for mental stimulation make them unsuitable for apartment living without significant daily exercise. Prospective owners should be aware of common health concerns such as hip and elbow dysplasia, as well as degenerative myelopathy, underscoring the importance of responsible breeding and regular veterinary care.
