Description

Dog Breed: Dachshund (short coat). .Meet Pepper Flake, a 12 year old, 15 pound male dachshund. In order to truly understand him, you have to know that his favorite thing in the entire world is Scotty Crispin. Pepper strongly believes that life is not worth living without Scotty. When the boys first came into the rescue they went to separate homes, as is customary. Pepper, however, did not appreciate this custom and took it upon himself to howl for his brother. When you're this old... you know what you want, and for Pepper, it's anything involving Scotty. Upon reuniting, he promptly calmed down, came out of his shell, and became a pretty happy boy himself. His second favorite activities are cuddling and following scents. Pepper has been diagnosed with Cushings and is on medication for it. He is doing great with the meds. If Pepper is in the house, he wants to be snuggled up somewhere cozy. But if he's outside, boy oh boy, his nose is going. He would love nothing more than to run security checks on your yard and can be quite the character when he finds one. In addition, he does have a mischeivous streak and won’t hesitate to steal things off your plate. We would say that he's a bit crotchety when his people have a different idea of what he should be doing, and he's only recently discovered this “potty training” thing. Pepper is really looking for a home where he can remain together with Scotty Crispin for the rest of their lives with humans who will help them stay healthy. They'd love a daily walk and some nearby green space and as many cuddles as you're willing to give them. If that is you, please put in an application for this dynamic duo. Overview:

The Dachshund, affectionately known as the "wiener dog," is a fascinating breed originating in Germany, primarily bred to hunt badgers and other burrowing animals. Their most distinctive physical characteristic is their long, low-slung body and short, muscular legs, a feature perfectly adapted for tunneling. They come in three coat types – smooth, longhaired, and wirehaired – and various sizes, from miniature to standard. Temperamentally, Dachshunds are known for being courageous, curious, and often quite playful, with a surprising amount of energy. While they are intelligent, their independent nature can make training a delightful challenge. Their small size and relatively low exercise requirements make them well-suited for apartment living, and they can be wonderful companions for families, though early socialization is key, especially with children and other pets. Regarding health, their unique body shape predisposes them to intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), so careful handling and weight management are crucial.
