Name: Layla Best Guess for Breed: Hound mix Best Guess for Age: 5 months as of March 2026 SEX: Female Approximate Weight: 30 lbs as of 3/27/26; she is a growing puppy! Gets Along With: Other dogs! We haven't seen her with cats or kids but we are happy to discuss integration techniques with any potential adopters! Currently Living at: South Carolina shelter - needs a foster or forever home in the DC area to get up here. Layla is Looking For: Her forever home! Layla is no longer a tiny squishy baby but she's still a puppy and wants what puppies want - play time and exploration and cuddles. Sniffy walks, romps with pup pals, all the adventures her humans can dream up - yes, please! And dog school, so she can show how super smart she is. Shelter staff say she is a really nice pup. She's looking forward to loving and being loved by her humans, to being a loyal companion for all her days. Are you Layla's happily ever after? Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
