You can also find previous episodes on our YouTube channel (gprspyrs). If you would like a specific dog to be featured on our show, please email us at infogreatpyreneesrescuesociety ** Balou and his sister Lumi are a bonded pair who recently lost their beloved owner — and now they’re looking for a forever home together. Balou, born around April 2019, is just about perfect — a gorgeous badger head with a calm, confident personality. He walks beautifully on the leash, rides like a dream in the van (puppy cups optional but highly recommended), and is completely housebroken. Balou loves affection, brushing, and attention from everyone he meets. His only quirk? A bit of counter surfing if food is left out, so a watchful eye in the kitchen is all that’s needed. As a devoted big brother, Balou looks out for Lumi and helps her feel safe in the world. He’s gentle with cats and gets along well with mellow dogs. He’d thrive in an adult-only home or one with older kids who understand how special a calm, confident pup like him can be. Balou isn’t just looking for a home — he’s looking for the forever family who will adopt him and Lumi together, giving them both the love and stability they deserve. Overview:
The Great Pyrenees is a majestic and ancient breed, originating in the Pyrenean mountains between France and Spain, where they served as formidable livestock guardians. Physically, they are large, powerful dogs, easily recognized by their thick, double coat, typically white (though sometimes marked with badger, grey, or tan), and a distinctive "double dewclaw" on their hind legs. Despite their imposing size, their temperament is generally calm, gentle, and remarkably patient, making them excellent companions. They possess a natural protectiveness, which translates to a watchful eye over their families and property. While loving and tolerant with children, their size and barking tendencies make them less suited for small apartment living; a home with a yard is ideal. Prospective owners should be aware of common health concerns such as hip and elbow dysplasia, patellar luxation, and certain eye conditions, emphasizing the importance of responsible breeding. Their independent nature also means they require consistent, positive reinforcement training.
