Description
Dog Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (medium coat). Meet Oreo, the pittie mix. Oreo came into the Shelter after his previous guardian was unable to continue caring for him. He lived in a home with two small breed dogs and a family. Oreo has been interested in interacting with staff and volunteers since his arrival. He is often at his kennel door with a softly wagging tail, ready to say hi to any approaching visitor. He met a large breed female dog (Suzie) and enjoyed her company. A home with another dog may be a fit after a meet ân greet at the Shelter. We do not have any history of Oreo with children or other species of animals. Oreo does have some skin issues that he is being treated for by our clinic staff with oral and topical treatments. He may not win the âbest hairâ superlative at this time but we are aiming for âmost improvedâ in a few weeks after his treatments start to help his skin feel and look better. We are not entirely sure what the cause of his skin issues are but the pattern is common to allergies (especially to fleas) with a secondary skin infection. Adopters will need to plan on working with their veterinarian closely after adoption to help Oreoâs skin continue to improve, as we do anticipate that the condition is chronic and will require lifelong management. Our clinic team can provide more information to any potential adopters about Oreo and his current medical status. If you are looking to adopt a dog that is a bit of a diamond in the ruff, consider coming to meet Oreo today! The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering âPawsitivity Bucksâ with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz locationâs Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end âmeet and greetsâ (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If youâd like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.

Breed overview
Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
