Duke is a 2-year-old medium sized mixed breed with a short tricolour coat and a friendly, easygoing personality that makes him a joy to be around. Duke has a medium energy level and enjoys a nice mix of playtime and relaxation. He has done well with other dogs and children, making him a great fit for a family environment. Duke has not yet met a cat, so his relationship with cats is unknown at this time. He is a social and approachable boy who enjoys being around people and taking part in everyday activities. His house training, crate training and leash training are in progress. Although many dogs become reliable with house training, accidents can still occur while adjusting to a new home environment. Duke would do well in a home that offers patience, consistency, daily exercise, and positive training as he continues to learn and settle into a routine. A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
