Dog Breed: Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler / Mixed (short coat). Location: Jay, ME AVAILABLE Wilkie Meet Wilkie: an adorable 12 week old male Australian Cattle Dog. (We know that his mama is a Cattle Dog. Dad didn’t leave a calling card.) Wilkie is: Happy Busy Curious Brave Resilient Affectionate Athletic Smart People-focused Extremely food motivated. Wilkie has the sweet and spunky spirit of an adventurer, and the potential to grow into the dog of your dreams! Naturally, Wilkie will require adopters who are ready to provide continued positive socialization, and the level of physical and mental exercise required by a high-drive herding breed. Wilkie is catching on fast to house training, sleeps through the night, is very quiet in his pen and while riding in the car. His perfect adopter will understand that Cattle Dogs are not easy - not Dog 101 - and be up for the challenge to train with fun and creativity to help Wilkie learn all of the puppy things he needs to know, and beyond. Wilkie has loved every human he’s met, but is still very much in mouthy Cattlegator puppy mode. Because he is still learning to curb the enthusiastic use of his sharp teeth while playing, he is not a good match for small children. Families with kids 8+ will be considered, providing they have breed experience. Any resident dogs should be playful yet patient with puppy shenanigans. He has not interacted with cats. Wilkie will be adopted with a neuter contract. He is microchipped and up to date on age appropriate vaccinations and preventatives. Wilkie is being fostered in Maine. A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
