Description
Dog Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier (medium coat). Charlie came in as a stray on 3/27 and, although microchipped, his previous owner was unable to reclaim him. He was reported to be housebroken and crate trained, previously living with other dogs, and is described as a sweet, cuddly boy who loves attention and even enjoys vegetables as treats. In the shelter environment, Charlie has shown a calm, easygoing sideâhe walks well on leash with only a slight pull, is treat-motivated, knows âsit,â and enjoys staying close to his handler for pets and reassurance. In more structured dog interactions, Charlie has shown some selectivity with other dogs, particularly males, and will need careful introductions and management in any future canine pairings. In playgroup, he was forward and stiff in greetings and required intervention during an altercation with a male dog, so a more controlled approach to dog interactions is recommended. Outside of that context, staff and volunteers consistently describe him as friendly, gentle, and very sweetâeasy to handle, non-reactive to kenneled dogs, and more focused on people than anything else. Charlie will thrive in a home that appreciates his affectionate, low-key personality while providing guidance and structure around dog introductions.

Overview:
The American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT) is a robust and intelligent breed, originating in the United States from crossbreeding Old English Terriers and Old English Bulldogs for dog-fighting purposes. Physically, they are medium-sized, known for their muscular build, broad heads, and powerful jaws, typically weighing between 30-60 pounds. Their coats are short and come in a wide array of colors. Temperamentally, a well-socialized APBT is often described as loyal, affectionate, and people-oriented, displaying a playful and sometimes clownish demeanor. They can be excellent family companions, provided they receive consistent training and early socialization, though their high energy levels mean they thrive with active owners. While they can adapt to apartment living with sufficient exercise, a house with a secure yard is often preferred. Notable health considerations include a predisposition to hip and elbow dysplasia, allergies, and certain heart conditions.
