Description
Dog Breed: Chihuahua (short coat). Meet Dewey! Dewey is a 5-year-old apple head Chihuahua with a gentle soul and a heart full of love, despite the difficult start he’s had. He came into the shelter severely underweight after not being properly fed, but this tiny boy has proven he’s a resilient little fighter. Since coming into foster care, Dewey has been on a carefully monitored feeding plan and is already making great progress toward a healthy weight. He’s been seen by our vet and has a medical plan in place to support his recovery every step of the way. With proper care, good nutrition, and lots of love, Dewey is truly blossoming. What makes Dewey so special isn’t just his resilience—it’s his incredibly sweet and affectionate nature. He absolutely LOVES to snuggle and will happily curl up in your lap any chance he gets. He’s crate-trained, house-trained, and gets along well with other dogs. Even more endearing, Dewey seeks out affection from every person he meets—he just wants to love and be loved. Dewey is up to date on vaccines, has been treated for heartworms, and is microchipped. His neuter is covered by Legacy Humane Society—we’re just giving him a few weeks to gain a bit more weight before his surgery. Dewey is looking for a patient, compassionate family who will continue helping him regain his strength while giving him the forever home he’s always deserved. In return, he promises to be your most loyal little companion. If you think you might be the person to make that special connection and give Dewey the loving home he’s been waiting for, please complete an application at legacyhumanesociety, and his foster mom will be in touch. We do not have a facility to house the dogs in our program. They are all kept in foster homes until they are adopted. Therefore, if you are interested in adopting from LHS, please complete an online application at legacyhumanesociety/adoptfoster/adoption-application/ and we will contact you asap about the status of your application.

Overview:
The Chihuahua, a captivating breed known for its diminutive size, boasts an ancient and somewhat mysterious origin, with most theories pointing to Mexico as its birthplace, potentially descending from the "Techichi," a small companion dog of the Toltec civilization. Physically, they are easily recognizable by their small, compact bodies, large expressive eyes, and erect ears, appearing in both smooth and long-coated varieties, showcasing a vast array of colors and markings. Despite their tiny stature, Chihuahuas possess a big personality; they are often described as spirited, alert, and fiercely loyal to their owners, sometimes displaying a bold and confident demeanor. While their small size makes them exceptionally well-suited for apartment living, they thrive in homes where they receive ample attention and mental stimulation. They can be good family pets for older children who understand how to interact gently with a small dog, but their delicate build makes them less suitable for boisterous toddlers. Regarding health, Chihuahuas can be prone to certain conditions like patellar luxation, heart problems, and dental issues, making regular veterinary check-ups crucial for their well-being.
