Description

Dog Breed: German Shorthaired Pointer (short coat). Meet Riff—also known as “Woody”—a handsome, 3-year-old German Shorthaired Pointer with a big heart, a playful spirit, and the sweetest, most affectionate nature you could ask for! Weighing in at 68 pounds, Riff is everything people adore about the GSP breed: energetic, affectionate, and happiest when he’s with his people. He’s a classic “velcro dog” who will gladly stick by your side whether you’re heading out for an adventure or just relaxing at home. And yes—he’s already mastered one very important skill: looking absolutely adorable at all times! He’s kind, loving, and incredibly people-oriented—he adores everyone he meets, from adults to kids, and has even been gentle and respectful with a young toddler. He’s especially fond of his people and lives for cuddle time just as much as he enjoys playtime. If you’re looking for a dog who will be both your adventure buddy and your snuggle companion, Riff is your guy. Riff is also wonderfully social with other dogs. He’s lived harmoniously with multiple dogs of different ages and genders and happily welcomed even more visiting pups into the mix. He would truly thrive in a home with another friendly dog to play with and keep him company. This smart boy is a fast learner who genuinely wants to please. He’s already house-trained (about 98% and doing great!) and picked it up in just about a week—pretty impressive! He knows “sit” and “leave it,” and is making great progress on “down” and “off.” Like many young, energetic dogs, he’s still working on his manners—he can get excited and jump up to say hello—and he’s eager to learn and improves quickly with consistency and positive reinforcement. Riff does have a few things he’ll need help with in his new home. He’s very strong on leash and doesn’t yet have polished leash manners, so continued training will be important. He also isn’t a fan of the crate and can be resistant to going in, though he settles nicely when left loose in a safe space for short periods. He’s generally calm when left alone and will happily nap on the bed. As a typical GSP, Riff has an active side! He benefits from daily exercise and thrives with a mix of play and activity—think fetch, yard zoomies, and squirrel-chasing sessions. He currently enjoys 1–2 hours of active play each day (broken into shorter sessions), plus additional yard time. Without enough activity, he may entertain himself by chewing on soft, fuzzy items—so keeping him engaged is key. Riff is looking for a home with: A large, securely fenced yard Another playful dog companion An active family committed to ongoing training and exercise Riff is truly a special dog—affectionate, gentle, social, and eager to bond. His foster describes him as one of the easiest dogs they’ve ever had and can’t understand why he hasn’t been scooped up yet. Everyone who meets him falls in love. If you have the space, a canine companion, and the willingness to continue his training, Riff will reward you with endless loyalty, love, and companionship. He’s ready to make someone incredibly happy—could that someone be you? Overview:

The German Shorthaired Pointer (GSP) is a versatile and elegant sporting breed, originating in 19th-century Germany where it was developed for hunting various game. Physically, GSPs are known for their athletic build, sleek coat (typically liver or liver and white), and intelligent, expressive eyes. They possess a strong, muscular physique that enables them to excel in diverse activities. Temperamentally, GSPs are energetic, intelligent, and highly trainable, making them excellent companions for active individuals or families. Their loyal and affectionate nature means they thrive on human interaction, but their high energy levels necessitate ample daily exercise to prevent boredom or destructive behaviors. While adaptable, their need for space and activity generally makes them less suitable for small apartment living unless their exercise requirements are exceptionally well-met. Regarding health, GSPs are a relatively robust breed, though they can be prone to certain conditions like hip and elbow dysplasia, eye conditions, and certain cancers. Responsible breeding and regular veterinary check-ups are crucial for maintaining their well-being.
