Description

Dog Breed: German Shepherd Dog (medium coat). I AM GROOT! (Okay… not that Groot, but just as loyal.) Guardian of your house, your heart, and definitely any kind of ball. I’m a 3-year-old, 75 pound German Shepherd who’s ready to be your best friend and constant companion. I’ll follow you everywhere—seriously, everywhere—because being near my person is my favorite place to be - yes, even if that means I’m “in the way”:) I am dog and cat friendly and get along well with older children. I am fully housebroken and crate trained, but can be trusted to free roam. I’ve got that classic GSD personality—protective with a big bark when needed, but gentle, loving, and sometimes convinced I’m a lap dog. Tell me what you want, and I’ll do my best to make you proud… but if there’s a ball nearby, all bets are off. I LOVE to chase a ball. Like… a lot. Because of that, I’m looking for an active home that will keep me moving and engaged. Daily exercise isn’t optional for me—it’s my happy place. So if you’re more “couch potato” than “let’s go play,” I might not be your guy. But if you want a loyal sidekick, a protector, and a goofy best friend who will stick by your side through everything… I’m ready. If you're ready to adopt me and start our adventure together, please contact your adoption coordinator. If you do not yet have an adoption coordinator, please complete an adoption application at .freedomgermanshepherdrescue I am being fostered outside of Wilmington, NC.

German Shepherd Dog

A.K.A.: Alsatian, Alsatian Wolf Dog, Shepherd Dog, GSD, Deutscher Schäferhund, Schäferhund, Berger Allemand, Pastore Tedesco, Perro de Pastor Alemán, Alsatian Dog
Overview:

The German Shepherd Dog, a truly iconic breed, originated in Germany in the late 19th century, primarily for herding sheep. They are easily recognizable by their athletic, medium-to-large build, typically weighing between 50-90 pounds, with a distinct double coat that can be black and tan, sable, or solid black. Known for their intelligence and loyalty, German Shepherds possess a remarkably trainable and courageous temperament, making them exceptional working dogs in fields like police and service work. While generally good with families when properly socialized, their high energy levels and need for mental stimulation make them unsuitable for apartment living without significant daily exercise. Prospective owners should be aware of common health concerns such as hip and elbow dysplasia, as well as degenerative myelopathy, underscoring the importance of responsible breeding and regular veterinary care.
