Has lived in a home with young children Has done well with another dog at the shelter No known experience with cats Onyx is a fun-loving dog bursting with puppy energy and enthusiasm for life. He has lived with young kids and done well, showing a playful and gentle side in a family environment. At the shelter, he has also gotten along nicely with another dog, especially when enjoying time outside “roughhousing” together in the yard. Onyx loves going for walks, exploring the world around him, and showing off his sitting skills when asked. He’s very treat-motivated and eager to learn, which makes training both rewarding and enjoyable with him. The online adoption listing websites require that we choose a predominant breed or breed mix for our dogs. Visual breed identification in dogs is unreliable so for most of the dogs we are only guessing at predominant breed or breed mix. A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
