Description
Dog Breed: Shih Tzu (medium coat). MEET SHERIFF! Sheriff is a friendly, opinionated, and adorable middle age shih tzu who is looking for his fur-ever home! Sheriff would prefer to live in a home with dog savvy children or adults only, he would probably prefer to be an only dog but could live with another well matched dog friend provided they take things slowly. This sweet guy dislikes a lot of handling but lets his trusted friends handle him provided they listen to his cues. He has even been known to sport a stylish sweater when it is cold outside! Sheriff has another request for his new family, he wants lots of balls to play with! This silly boy wants someone to take a chance on him and would love to be the sheriff of your house. My friends describe me as: Goofy, shy, and clever. Sheriff is currently up to date on all vaccinations, has been spayed/neutered, microchipped, and seen by our vet team. For more information on Sheriff or any other animal currently residing at the Animal Rescue League of Boston, please call us at 617-426-9170. We welcome adopters from NH, RI, CT, and NY. However, we will be unable to facilitate same day adoptions due to state regulated paperwork requirements.

Overview:
The Shih Tzu, affectionately known as the "lion dog," boasts an ancient and regal lineage, originating from the Tibetan plateau and further refined in imperial China. These charming canines are easily recognized by their striking appearance: a small, sturdy build, a distinctive undershot jaw, and a long, flowing double coat that often requires regular grooming to prevent matting. Temperamentally, Shih Tzus are renowned for being affectionate, outgoing, and playful companions, making them wonderfully suitable for a variety of households. Their adaptable and generally good-natured disposition means they often thrive in families with children and are particularly well-suited for apartment living due to their modest exercise requirements. While generally robust, potential owners should be aware of common breed-specific health concerns, including respiratory issues (due to their brachycephalic, or "smushed" face), eye conditions, and luxating patella. Despite these considerations, a Shih Tzu typically brings immense joy and companionship to their devoted owners.
